An Environmental Science and Research study found that some people may experience short-term anxiety if consuming more than 3mg of caffeine daily for each kilogram of body weight – about four cups of tea a day for adults.

Energy drinks to go under regulators’ microscope

A review of caffeinated energy drink guidelines has been announced on both sides of the Tasman after warnings that the drinks can cause irritability, anxiety and dizziness.
|
For most healthy adults, up to 400mg of caffeine in total a day – equivalent to four lattes – appeared to have no ill-effects, but there was evidence caffeine consumed by pregnant women could affect the growth of babies.
|
The review group will also hear from the intergovernmental committee on drugs, on the issue of mixing alcohol with caffeinated energy drinks.
|
An international study found that mixing highly caffeinated energy drinks with alcohol increased a person’s chances of making rash decisions, such as driving drunk. There are also reports of intoxicated people collapsing as the effects of energy drinks wear off.
